Some key takeaways/ great performances from this weekend:
Any time you break 16 minutes on Mt. Sac, it's cause for celebration. Landen was about 10 seconds off his personal best and ran a 15:49 to help lead the varsity squad this past weekend.
Great job up front Landen!

The following boys had personal bests:
 J Brown 16:33 (-17 seconds)
Ginete 19:09 (-15 seconds)
A. Gossard 19:41 (-16 seconds)
Guerrero 21:28 (-27 seconds)
Hiett 23:05 (-66 seconds)
Jaureguie 26:15 (-42 seconds)
Padua 21:09 (-2 seconds)
Some key takeaways/ great performances from this weekend:
We had a solid varsity 1-4 showing in the varsity team sweeps race. We discussed what it will take over the next few weeks to get ourselves ready to step up and not only make CIF Finals, but compete there and earn a bid to the state meet. We need a consistent # 5 to step up and close the gap.

PRs:
Isabella 25:33 (-28 seconds)
Salma 23:34 (close to her 5k converted time)
Hazey 28:15 (-10 seconds)
Reese 23:50 (-5 seconds)

Woodbridge invitational 9/18/21

Woodbridge Results
Boys 9th grade 21st out of 27 teams. Isaac earned a medal!
Girls 9th grade 11th out of 12 teams. Salma, Cereina and Jocelyn all medaled.
Girls JV 16th out of 18 teams. Missing some key scorers :(
Boys and Girls 10th grade - No Score. Highlights, Mady Nakamura wins her race 1st/101 girls, and many PRs from others!
Anybody can be varsity next year, so long as you work hard, and train smart.
Being varsity is a mentality. It's a lifestyle. Be the best at getting better.

Boys Juniors 1st place out of 17 teams, including three finishers in the top six
Boys Seniors Win big. 1st place out of 16 teams. 20 points in total, all seven runners in the top 19 overall, including five in the top nine.
Girls Varsity 5th out of 16 teams in the Varsity B Race. (Just as easily could have been 2nd in this race as a team, inserting Nakamura).

Key takeaways:
1. Know the course. Many of you did not know the finish line, or know how much you had left in the race. Key advice, know what the first and the last mile look like. By arriving early, walking/observing the course or other races, and not getting lost in the commotion that can be BIG XC INVITATIONALS, we can be more prepared. There will come a day when we will participate in BIG TRACK AND FIELD MEETS as well, and we want to aim to be the best at getting better.

2. Ninth grade girls: Know when your race is, and get to the starting line area 10-15 minutes before race time. Doing strides and hearing the starters instructions are super important. We came exceptionally close to missing our race.

3. Be prepared: Many of you did not have sweats and it cooled off quickly once the sun set. Always pack your sweats, and always put your phone, headphones, and other personal items in your bag when you are not using them. Including uniforms and racing flats.

4. Weather and temperature. Notice how much faster athletes ran in the cooler temperatures later in the evening. The earlier races we ran in still had some sunlight and a gentle breeze. Running under the lights and in the darkness/cooler temperatures, with an atmosphere that is hyped up, can and will produce fast times. Do not compare yourself to others in other races. Focus on how we did as a team, celebrate yours and your teammates' successes and aim to look at what you can do individually to make the team better.

5. Both Jenna and Manny are seniors with incredible upside, both in the short-term and long-term. Both are quick on the track, and will be genuine threats to score a lot of points and proceed to CIF this spring. Both of you are key scoring members of the varsity team when 100%. Neither of you are 100%, but you're healthy enough to race, and neither of you listened to race instructions.
Both of you ran with a lot of heart, and went out hard. We had discussed race instructions earlier & throughout the week.
Let's aim to be consistent with our training this week, and practice patience the first half of the xc race on 9/25.
I need you both to race with your brain, fulfil a role on the team this Saturday and help your senior squads win their races.
Run like you did at Woodbridge, only do it on November 20th and November 27th.

 Great work Mustangs!

THIS...........This is Cross-Country. Many athletes got their first taste of racing today, and no matter what, we all did a good job today. As long as you learned something about yourself today, and find something that you can strive to improve upon, you will get better.

Congrats to the whole team today. In the overall merge, Eleanor Roosevelt Men's team finished 4th overall out of 40 teams, despite missing three of our better runners (Andy, Manny, Julian). It was hot today, & we did not taper for today. Our goal, all along, is to be the best at getting better, and nothing matters until November when we aim do perform out best at League Finals for non-varsity, and CIF Finals for Varsity.

Notable performances: Junior boys finish 3rd overall with two runners in the top 11 in the field. Senior boys almost win, despite not having two out of our best three runners not on the line.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our girls today ran remarkably well, despite us training through this week. This will be the plan for most of the month of September as well. I saw a lot smiles today, and it's fun to compete, and do well with your teammates.
The women's team finished 2nd overall today in the merge out of 35 teams.

Notable performances: Sophomore Mady placed 8th overall today in her race, tying the highest finish by a Mustang all day. If only she had another mile to go! Junior girls finish 2nd overall in their race, led by 12th place Galilea.....and your senior girls are the CHAMPIONS!

Great job to Hannah, Kayla, J-Mar, Jenna and Megan for getting your bodies across the line on a tough course, in the heat, for the W. Hannah finished 8th, and Kayla 9th, only three seconds separating them. J-Mar ran a fantastic and calculated race picking off chicks and passing bodies throughout the race ton finish in 16th....and Jenna ran a gutsy race and despite getting chewed up by the pack, she held on for 19th overall. Jenna: Practice patience, and go out with the same amount of guts you did today, on November 20th. Until then, let's stay healthy, let's keep working hard, and let's focus on running "fast and easy". MEGAN FRICKEN SANDERS was our 5th senior girl today, and out of 106 runners, she finished 33rd overall. I think this was Megan's best performance of her life, and she's just getting started. There are a few things she can tweak to significantly improve her performances in a positive way. Hydration/Nutrition is important, but having a growth mindset is more important. Not a single girl on this team doubts what you are capable of accomplishing. I mean, you ran the most miles last week (48) than all of the other varsity girls. You're in the best shape of your life, and you have the best support around you. Give yourself a chance to do great, prepare to be great, and believe that you are great. Because you are. All of you are. Very proud of you all today.

Major takeaways- Running in cool weather is much easier to do than running in warm weather. Most teams train in the warm weather, and we're fortunate we run most mornings in the the cool weather. The warmer weather affected times, and I really do not like comparing times as much as I like comparing where we finished in the race. Place in the race matters most.

If you run the race, the time will come. Do not get caught up in comparing ourselves to other teams, just keep getting better, and trust the process.
