Lesson Introduction: Watch the 6 minute video and answer the question, "How was Europe plunged into WWI?" (1)

Notes: Hand write the Notes (Main Idea to Main Idea). Come prepared ready to discuss and make connections.

12.1 Main Idea: As World War I intensified, the United States was forced to abandon its neutrality.

4 Long Causes for the first World War.
  • Nationalism- "America (Murica!)" "For Mother Russia". Competitive rivalries among nations.
  • Imperialism - The process of gobbling up other countries for influence. Taking them over.
  • Militarism - increasing of military spending
  • System of Alliances- See #4

1. Both Russia (blue) and Austria-Hungary (Red) are rivals for influence over little Serbia (neutral).
(United States

2. The Assassination of Austria-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife.
The assassination of Franz Ferdinand led to a chain of events that eventually triggered off World War I. Millions of people would die.  Quote from one historian's perspective: "This day was one of the darkest and saddest moments in European history, as Archduke Franz Ferdinand, would have made a truly wonderful European Monarch who would have brought a voice to the many and peace to all."

3. Austria-Hungary (red) is not happy. Serbia (neutral) rejected Austria-Hungary's attempt to send people down to investigate the murder, they then proceed to declare war on Serbia (blue)

4. The Alliance System pulled countries in one by one. Germany (red) was backing Austria-Hungary (Red) and Russia (Blue) and France (Blue) were allied with Serbia (neutral). When Germany (Red) got involved with Belgium (Blue), England (Blue) was like "no way Jose" and joined the fight. There are a lot more blue countries than red countries.

5. Public Opinion in America was mixed. For the most part we wanted no part of the war. America was practicing Isolationism.

6. Propaganda- biased information designed to influence people's thoughts and actions, emerged in the form of British Propaganda. One newspaper title read "The Rape of Belgium". Why do you think that is eye catching?  The sinking of the Lusitania shocked and awed Americans, and even one Magazine referred to Germany as "the bully of Europe".

7. How do you think the immigrants in America were feeling about their home countries fighting back in Europe? (2)

8.The British Blockade of the coast resulted in farms failing and 750,000 Germans starved or died as a result. No supplies or foodstuffs could get into the empire. America was mad because we wanted free trade throughout the seas, and now we can't trade with Germany. That closed down a huge economic market for us.

9.Meanwhile, Germany kept sinking ships to make a point, that they wanted the blockade removed. Whose navy never gave in? (3)

10.The United States declares WAR  on Germany after the Zimmerman note was intercepted en route to Mexico, which saw Germany trying to use Mexico, by having them start a war with the United States to make up for "lost territory".
What territory are they referring to? (4)

12.2 Main Idea: The United States mobilized a large army and navy to help the Allies achieve victory.
