Vons is within walking distance but very expensive.Remember this trip will be fun, but our main focus is to run and bond as a team. Please come ready to train hard and get all that you can out of camp and being the best.

You will be assigned rotating kitchen duties, please be prepared to clean up and help the parents with cooking. We need to be mindful that people come up to Mammoth for vacations and we have a responsibility to be good citizens and good representatives of our school and the running community.

Rules for ALL ATHLETES: This is in addition to your team policy... We have not had any major issues in the past but kids are still young and make mistakes and it’s important that we all do our parts to ensure all school rules, team rules, and the laws are followed. If you know someone is thinking about doing something stupid, like breaking the rules, discourage them and tell a coach or parent please.

1) All parents on the trip have equal authority with the coaches. What they ask is to be obeyed without comments.
2) 10:00 pm lights out!! (11:00 pm last night). No Exceptions.
3) Trips into town or on the trolley must have the permission of one coach or adult and go in a group of at least four (4) people. This means anytime you leave the condo complex. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
4) Violation of any rules will result in consequences for ALL ATHLETES. Athletes may be sent home.
5) Always remember that you are a representative of Eleanor Roosevelt High School Cross Country.
6) Additional rules may be added at any given time.
7) SHOW RESPECT TO OTHERS TO EARN THEIR RESPECT
8) While this is a co-ed camp, there are time & place rules. Athletes are to remain in groups, when in doubt, wait outside. Athletes of the opposite gender will be allowed in other cabins when adult chaperones/coaches are present, Eg.: team board games, team meetings, team dinners. Athletes need to be in groups of four or more at all times when venturing around. Buddy system. Athletes should never be alone with another athlete of the opposite sex. Common sense will be followed.

9) Attending Mammoth Lakes Camp is a privilege, and I hope that you help make Mammoth Camp an enjoyable experience for everyone, obey all rules, and get all that you can out of yourself. We hope that we are going to be able to make this training camp an annual tradition.

gratitude

How can we as a team help each other be the best at getting better? We need to have a team culture that is built on faith-trust-love in one another, and we need to trust the process.

-Filter out the negative (ignore what others are doing). Social media. Start focusing on your own journey and individual path.

-Appreciate more. Tell your parents thank you for allowing you to take part in such a cool, special experience. So many people live and stay within their own little world, and it can be difficult to break out of our shells and open up. I appreciate you showing an interest in one of my favorite things to do in this world; Running. Thank you for challenging yourself this week.

-Help me celebrate the small things. I hope you walk away from this meeting with more intention to go out and appreciate the little things in life.
-How can we do more to help others?
-What can you do to help others?
-Training logs, take a few minutes out of your day to write & reflect. (Who did I help today?)

I believe that if we all work together, we can really accomplish some great things this season.

Little thing ideas:
-Annual Trashtag Team cleanup (we already do this)
-CNUSD MS XC Meets (we volunteer, but can we do more?)
-birthday shout outs (in the past we did bigs/littles in the past)
-thank the real ones: booster club parents, coaches, teammates, other teammates, other runners, other coaches, red coats, meet directors, volunteers, etc. Be kind to everyone, and know that there is a place in this world for all of us, and I hope you can appreciate the little things in life.
-Your thoughts?

-We need to come up with a Team motto for the season

Ohtani Picture: When Shohei Ohtani was a sophomore in high school, he filled out this chart outlining what he thought he needed to do to achieve his goal of becoming a baseball star. It’s part of the Harada Method, a Japanese self-improvement technique. I guess it worked.

self-Discipline/ Time management

Takeaway from today: Create and maintain a training log. Writing and forced daily reflection will make you a better person. Routine. Sacrifice.
1. Vitamin N: Learn to say No
2. Set priorities right.
3. Avoid Complaining

Committment -->
Compelled

Picture
Definition of CommitmentCommitment is defined as the state or quality of being dedicated to your sport. It is important to note that it is something you choose to do. Commitment is shown three different ways:
    1. Body Language – being strong, confident, and getting back up when things go wrong
    2. Effort – attempts are sustained and working hard all the time
    3. On and off the field – commitment is being worked on by the decisions in both places
The Commitment ContinuumThe Team Captain’s Leadership Manual by Jeff Janssen gives a visual breakdown of the levels of commitment.
Existent
This person is there in body but not in mind. These are the people who physically show up, go through the motions but are not engaged. It is likely they won’t go far in the sport and they can be difficult to work with.
Compliant
These are the “obedient soldiers,” that don’t go above and beyond. These people will do what they’re told, but not with a full effort. This type commonly appears in youth level sports, where they don’t bring their own commitment or discipline. This type will not work at the college level because they don’t care about their choices on and off the field.
Committed
This level will do what they’re told but also show up with their own performance goals, motivation, and discipline. They take instructions and work to improve. They can also shake off mistakes and bounce back after rough days. They are committed to getting it right and coaches will notice their efforts.
Compelled
Compelled is the highest level of commitment because they will “find a way” to be successful. Oftentimes, this is not the most talented person because they have to work harder to get where they want to be. It is sometimes seen with walk-ons in college football – they have to find a way to be successful amongst the others. They develop a belief in themselves and will do everything the committed athlete does, plus more.
Obsessed
It is important to consider what happens when the line of compelled is crossed. “Obsessed” with sports can sometimes have a positive connotation, but in this case, it can mean crossing the line into dangerous behavior. This type of behavior can start to blur the line between:
    • Watching what you’re eating becoming an eating disorder
    • Strength and conditioning training can be overdone and turn into serious injuries
    • Running the extra mile, but it turns into 5-10 miles and you have nothing left for the next day
    • Not believing you can do it on your own and taking performance-enhancing drugs
This draws the distinction between an athlete who is healthy and someone who will push themselves to cheat or break the rules.
Performing To The Best Of Your AbilityAs a reflection exercise: think about your own level of commitment and where you fall on the commitment continuum. If you think you’re between compliant or committed, make a list of things that you can do to be more committed. If you are committed and want to step up to be compelled, make a list and ask your coach where you can improve.
Commitment is controllable. Choose where you want to be on the continuum and put in the work to get there.
I highly encourage you to talk to your coach or a mental training coach to discover how can make your way up the commitment ladder to be the best possible athlete.
